Family Medicine
Overview
The Department of Family Medicine is the first point of call for all out-patients or “cold cases” that present to the hospital where Family Physicians, Resident Doctors, Medical Officers and NYSC Doctors attend to these patients, and from there, those who require admission or further specialist out-patient care are admitted or referred appropriately. Basic laboratory investigations are available at the departmental side laboratory, so also treatments like giving injections and wound dressings are also done in the Family Medicine department by the Nurses.
The Head of Department usually emerges from among the Consultants within the Department, and he/she coordinates all activities (service, training and administration) in the department. He represents the department at Management level, and carries out all tasks and duties assigned by the Management. He is also answerable to the Management through the Head of Clinical Services.
