Clinical Microbiology
Overview
Introduction
The department of clinical microbiology and parasitology was created in 2016 following the separation of the four(4) primary departments of pathology or laboratory medicine. Although, it has existed as part of the laboratory department since the inception of the hospital in 1999. The main activity of the department is the laboratory diagnosis of infectious diseases caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi or parasites.
Staff
The current staff strength of the department include; 6 Consultant, 3 Senior Registrars,4 junior registrars, 3 Anaesthetic nurses and 3 technicians. 7 ICU trained nurses and 3 cardiothoracic nurses.

- Provisions of antibiogram
- Surveillance of infectious diseases and outbreak prevention.
- Molecular diagnostics: Gene Xpert for Mycobacterium tuberculosis
- Andrology services; Semen Fluid Analysis and semen culture.
- Consults/Referrals/Calls/Co-management of infectious diseases
- Research on infectious diseases.
- Infection control activities; Ward/Environmental and water surveillance of pathogens.
- Participate in Hospital antimicrobial stewardship program
Training
The department provides training to the following cadre of staff:
- Resident Doctors (Rotating from other clinical departments)
- Internship training of laboratory scientist
- Laboratory Technicians and Assistants
